JAPN 300: Introduction to Advanced Communication
This course is a bridge course from intermediate to advanced Japanese language. It continues development of proficiency in interpersonal, interpretive and presentational modes of communication in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Students develop communication strategies and cultural knowledge to prepare for advanced courses. Taught in Japanese.
Reflective Narrative
To begin a more advanced understanding of the structure of Japanese, I began with JAPN 300. This course would focus on interpersonal, interpretive and presentational communication of Japanese. Though this seemed similar to my lower division language courses, JAPN 300 was a class that served to give me the final push into intermediate level Japanese. My experiences each day in class were a challenge because I felt that despite my many years of studying, I was starting new with Japanese. I was learning all types of new ways to arrange the information I already knew so that I can sound more fluent and normal. In this class we worked on print outs but also practiced kanji. For assessments we took mini quizzes and also tests that had an accompanying oral interview. This class was also the first time I had to present in Japanese without looking a lot at my notecards, relying more on my grasp of the language. I took JAPN 301 in Spring 2018 in which I had another breakthrough or "push" in my Japanese skills.
