3.1 Students describe concepts of culture and use that understanding in their comparison of the target culture with the second culture.
3.2 Students will analyze and make connections among the ways of thinking and perspectives, behavioral practices and cultural products of a second culture.
Classes:
SBS 348 Maya Civilization
MLO 3: Secondary Culture
3.1 The secondary culture MLO is designed to help draw comparisons and understanding between a second culture other than the target culture I am studying. In this I am able to draw a deeper understanding of culture. I took the class SBS 348 in order to develop this understanding. I was also able to begin comparing my own mexican american culture with the Mayan culture, also seeing roots for some of my central american ancestors culture.
3.2 SBS 348 brought me a very deep and thorough understanding of Mayan culture. Through this course, I learned about the daily lives, religion and even language of the Maya (see example 1 below). We read codexes and watched documentaries exploring aspects of Mayan culture that are not typically shown in mainstream media. With my classmates I was able to learn about various daily rituals and lifestyles of Mayans as well as create a final project in which I connected Shinto with the indigenous religion of the Maya. In this project I painted a series of paintings to accompany a group presentation which included a Japanese exchange student as well. It was fun to find the connections between Mayan religion and Shintoism (see 2 below), it was very exciting to find similarities in the way both religions revere nature and spirits. Overall this class gave me a wider perspective on how to understand cultures other than my own.
