JAPN 311: Social Issues In Japan
As the drive to rebuild modern Japan after WWII has slowed, latent and new social problems have become visible. This course offers interdisciplinary perspectives on issues such as care of the elderly and homeless, equal treatment of minorities, gender and labor issues, domestic and world ecological concerns, and relevant institutions that promote or attack prejudice towards heterogeneous social groups. Taught in English.
Reflective Narrative
In this course I explored past social issues and also modern issues pressing on Japan's society. Using the knowledge gained in my lower division classes, I was able to develop a deeper interest and understanding of Japan's cultural background and their current modern lives. I saw many parallels between Japan and the USA. However through various assignments I was able to understand the issues facing Japan concurrently and possibly into the future. We did reading and reflections for this entire course as our homework with big projects intermittently. In order to compare Japan and our perspective on our own country, we also did a unit where multiple groups in the class researched social issues around the world and presented them to the class in a panel discussion format. We were also split into groups to explore the issues facing the different prefectures in Japan, this helped us to understand that Japan is a dynamic place just like the USA.
Example Work:
JAPN 311 Midterm Paper
JAPN 311 Group Midterm PPT
JAPN 311 Business and Employment in Japan Paper
