JAPN 403 Pre-Capstone
This course aims to develop an advanced level of academic communication through the formulation of research questions on linguistic and cultural topics, using appropriate research methods and critical thinking skills. Students utilize a variety of information sources to investigate, organize, and analyze the information. Taught in Japanese.
Reflective Narrative
In order to begin developing our Capstone, this class is essential to a good start. The structure of this class at every step made the idea of a capstone easier to handle. Initially I felt like I would not be able to organize my thoughts in a single project however with the instruction in this class I was able to fully grasp what research and project planning is like at the upper division level. I found a partner for my capstone and decided with her on what our mutual interests were. Afterwards, in class, we learned how to develop research questions and also learn a lot more using academic language. Each week we focused on a separate part of the research and presentation process. I was able to develop more skills in using powerpoint to deliver my research and be taken seriously. We also visited the library and learned more in depth about research, something that I had no idea there was more to learn. This class is all in english and serves to help us develop the base of our senior capstone. For the capstone preparation in this class we essentially created the skeleton of our capstone's powerpoint, began our literature review and began writing our survey questions (all in english). In the spring we transformed all of these building blocks into our final Japanese presentation.
